The 240GB SSD wore a green wrap that said "inland professional SSD" and it had read/write speeds and a few other misc infos.

I fought with this machine for a few days where it seemed like it worked, and I'd install various programs, etc, but then when I had my back turned, it crashed or something and would be sitting on the no bootable device screen. I assumed a bsod, but had no idea, exactly. except that the black screen when I noticed a problem, showed as if it was trying to boot up and there was no bootable drive installed. It's a USB drive with the card and the disks and USB 3 port all soldered together.For work, I had a computer come in that I ordered from Amazon (OEM machine with OS pre-installed) whereby upon first logging in and starting up Windows Updates, it froze up or something.

what I need to know is more how to get data off the drive now. I guess I'm kind of giving up on getting this drive to work- it seems whatever happened last night when the mac tried to sleep and ended up crashing ruined the disk. Windows also doesn't see a drive at all and in disk management shows only the internal drives and in command prompt shows only internal drives.Īfter more research, this appears to be a widespread issue with Western Digital drives on Macs going back to 2013. The only thing that shows up in either of those places is the internal PCIE drive on the Mac. Unfortunately, in order to transfer files between both Windows and Mac machines for work I have to either use FAT or ExFAT as they are the only ones supported by both.Īll of that is is beside the point- even if the filesystem was completely unsupported it should still show the drive itself and in disk utility or in terminal and allow me to format it from there. ExFAT was developed by Microsoft, hence the reason I tried all of the steps I know to try on both Windows and Mac machines. Has anyone else had success resolving this or, at the very least, getting their data back from a corrupted drive that won't show up in disk utilities? I've seen a few posts by people having similar issues going all the way back to 2010 and the only one that was resolved they said they just shut down and unplugged the Mac and waited overnight and it miraculously started working the next day.
I would need to go into desoldering the USB connection from the drive and I'm really not even sure that it's the connection that's the problem. This drive just has the USB 3.0 soldered right on the drive. I have an enclosure on hand but it's USB 2.0 that connects via SATA. I took it out of the enclosure as a last-ditch effort to see if there was an option to bypass the USB connection. I repeated the steps with known good USB cables and different ports on the PC. The drive still won't show up in device manager or disk management. I ran set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 in an elevated command prompt and set device manager to show all devices It spins up and sounds normal as its accessing disks. I tried it using 2 other known-working USB3 cables

The drive spins up, the lights come on and I can hear it accessing the disks. Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows is a simple, free tool from Western Digital that displays the model, serial number, partitions, capacity, and S.M.A.R.T. When it finally came on all but one of the external drives showed up: the one that had been used in rendering.

Apparently, Mac OS crashed at some point during that process and when I came back I found it turned off (it's on a battery backup with an alarm that goes off if it loses power so I know it didn't lose power) I powered it back on and it took a long while to start back up. I had Adobe Media Encoder rendering out footage to an external drive and was unattended. Mac-OS just killed a second external hard drive on me.
